Marty’s Commercial

Here’s the ad that Marty Burbank has been running on local cable channels:

Getting government out of the way so businesses can flourish seems to be a popular message this year.  Local business owners love to share their city hall horror stories, providing ample fodder for candidates willing to speak out against the bureaucratic nightmare that Don Bankhead has excused for decades.

It’s just too bad guys like Marty can’t extend that “get government out of the way” concept to the redevelopment agency, which harms the local economy in much the same way through economic interference, crony capitalism and the diversion of tax dollars from core services.

Oh well. Getting it half-right is better than nothing.

  1. I’m not sure about that “half-right” thing. A guy running on a “get gummint outta the way” platform, but who can’t understand that Redevelopment is inherently anti-business is a real problem.

  2. Christopher Columbus thought the world was round and that India was only an ocean away. He was half-right.

Of course, he never learned the truth, and died as a useful idiot.

should be compulsory reading for ALL council candidates.

Incremental tax diversion (good for the RDA but not good for municipal services) are sitting at around 12% statewide.

The $28MM debt to monetize the tax increment was recently approved unanimously by council.

The FTC Specific Plan sailed through planning commission and is set for a council hearing on Oct 19th I believe. Even with the ‘split’ council of four I think the vote will be to approve 4-0.

So much for creating a level playing field.

  4. Yeah, that was completely vacuous. Absolutely nothing to say. I’m surprised the cop union didn’t latch on to this cypher. Of course they have plenty of other zeroes to choose from.

    They are zeroes and deserve.

  5. Marty is a nice guy but he seems to be easily sold to…too easily. He was all for the RDA expansion even though it might have been illegal. And he’s the attorney??
Let’s also not forget that Burbank and Chi are inseparable. Those two and the Bic Mac “I’m a bad ass ex-chief” McKinley were all seen hanging out together at Renick’s Cadillac dealership a couple weeks ago, slurping up the special interest money.
