Fail to Nowhere
Congratulations, Fullerton. The infamous Trail to Nowhere, or as it is called in City Hall circles, the “UP Trail Phase II,” is now six months old.
None of its adherents inside of City Hall or in the hallowed and self-righteous pages of the Fullerton Observer will ever follow up to actually see if has been a successful expenditure of 2.5 million bucks. The bureaucrats who will be hard at work looking for their next boondoggle will never give it another thought; nor will the cowardly City Council that approved the waste, caving into a gaggle of local fools. It was all for la communidad and when top-down patronizing government is hard at work, money is no object.
But I will keep reminding FFFF.
Because I happen to drive down Highland Avenue and often Richman Avenue I get periodic glimpses into what all that money bought. And what I have seen is precisely what this blog predicted all along. It’s almost always empty. And that makes a lot of sense because it starts in the back of Independence Park and dies at Highland. It doesn’t even connect to Phase I – a deficiency so obvious that you would have thought someone on the City Council might have noticed. If they did they didn’t say a word in objection.
Obviously the community, the supposed beneficiary of this largesse doesn’t use it. Why would they?
In her grant application to the State of California, now retired Park employee Alice Loya bragged about connectivity. There isn’t any. She dreamed up 105,000 anticipated users annually. The users so far could probably be counted in the hundreds. The trail was going to be a miraculous incubator for redevelopment of the surrounding area. All lies. And a plankton colony could have seen it. But not the geniuses in City Hall. Or they didn’t care.
Even as we are being asked to make sacrifices because of their inability to run the City, we have yet another facility without the means to maintain it. Other parks were already suffering from neglect, and of course Hillcrest Park, what should be the crown jewel of Fullerton parks continues to be intentionally neglected through institutional apathy. Its bare hillsides are a testament to that neglect.
And the case of Hillcrest is ironic because many of the casual users are Latinos – just the sort of folks the Trail to Nowhere was meant to patronize. However, a sense of irony is not one of the qualities one associates with government agencies who talk a good talk, but in the end always opt for the park project that will give them something to do.
They should have had the wisdom to build something AFTER redevelopment was taking place, not before. There is no clientele. Obvious to an idiot.
WE should be congratulated on Loya’s retiring. We’re paying her massive pension. But at least she’s gone. Started her career under Susan Hunt, the Wicked Witch of City Hall.

Just because nobody uses it now doesn’t mean thousands won’t flock to it when word gets out. The locals just don’t know what’s good for them, but we know and will educate them.
Actually who knows how many people are using it now. Fiends for Fullerton’s failure is notoriously full of shit.

News spread to the adjacent CrossFit Structsured gym owners, who quickly incorporated the improved trail into their members’ grueling workouts. Now, every class uses the path all day, every day. At least one Fullerton business is reaping the benefits; the members can jog quickly to Independence Park and back, which sure beats running up and down Walnut Ave, while dodging heavy industrial traffic and speeding vehicles. Glad to see a local business making use of it.

Why measure when you can just assume your own reality into existence?
I go by there all the time. Never see a soul. That’s because it doesn’t go anywhere.
Always interested to hear careful scientific observations from people that don’t think Independence Park and Highland and all places in between are in our universe. “Nowhere”
Um, what places in between? The backsides of factories? The used tire stores? Enlighten us.
Every one is dying to get to Highland Ave and turn around. You could try to cross but you might get run over.
The Fail to Nowhere.
We’ve covered this before. Highland Ave is a place. IP is a place, people go there. People go to from both via different modalities. Neither end of the trail is a dead end so it doesn’t qualify for any precise or vernacular conception of “nowhere.” Since both ends are somewhere and not a dead end, it is not a “trail to nowhere.”
Cyclists move through a mix of roads and trails as is convenient to them depending on where they are going.

Riding on the road or the sidewalk to any eventual destination is always an option so the nonsense about it just ending at Highland is of no interest. At the end of the trail a cyclist will join the flow of traffic or switch to the sidewalk. A pedestrian will use the sidewalk and cross if they need to where it is safe to do so.
Ho hum. Cyclists are dying to to ride the Trail Fail to Nowhere. But you havn’t, have you. Loser.

It wasn’t meant to be safe, it was just meant to be there. Its existence is the sole reason for its existence. Sort of a tautological exercise in waste.
I drive by the parking lot every day. Only ever one or two cars and more than likely just people sitting there smoking pot.

In actuality you aren’t in any position to know how many people have used it or how often but you cannot help but make pronouncements.
Oh I have a good statistical basis, having access to surveillance cameras near the mid point of this boondoggle.
