Mob Mentality?

The closer you look, the worse it gets...

Apparently FPD PIO Andrew Goodrich misses the irony when describing an outraged public he thinks is suffering from a mob mentality; of course it’s okay for the cops to act like a lynch-type mob, as they did with Kelly Thomas.

Here’s an e-mail in which the propagandist Goodrich shares his observations on an LA Time editorial with his boss, soon to be sick Mike Sellers. Goodrich may have wished for some cooling off but it didn’t happen. And the not so “glowing” tone of the media didn’t get any better, either.

64 Replies to “Mob Mentality?”

  1. Mob mentality. Really.

We wouldn’t EVEN BE HERE had a mob not beat the life out of Kelly Thomas.

God damn it. This is so frustrating.

  2. We were not a vigilante lynch mob outside of the police station every Saturday.
We were parents and citizens who held a vigil for justice for another father’s son.

  3. Yeah, that’s right, we’re a mob of justifiably outraged citizens, and there is nothing wrong with that.

  4. WOW Andy, in all your years of police work you haven’t paid much attention.

If you spent a little time reading, talking with others instead of walking around with your head up your bosses ass, you might have learned something and not make such comments about the public.

In all of your years and no doubt AWESOME resume you would have had a few plans you could have suggested to the administration to implement that shows transperancy and UNDERSTANDING of this outrage.

Two glaring failures you can’t argue PAL!!.

The obvious was Sellers was bailing out on ALL of you from minute 1 of this scandal. The emails PROVE it.

Second was your brothers in arms deciding to ticket the “mob” when they honked their horns in support of the protesters.

A glaring “us vs them”, “we will shown them assholes who’s in charge”, attitude.

The one who ordered the tickets torn up was the ONE who was thinking.

Were you a cop during the Rodney King riots?

If you were, then you would have learned what the MOB mentality was all about.

Every African American that didn’t like cops had a video camera they would stick it in your face, everytime you stopped someone there was a crowd around you WATCHING every move you made and WAITING to complain if you stepped out of line.

People of all colors wanting to challenge you every time you attempted to do your job.

REMAIN calm and focused, allow those to video tape whatever they want as long as they were not in your face. Let’s those say whatever they wanted if it made them happy.

A simple verbal judo skill of telling those who were defiant, “say what you want, but please do what I say”, if not ACT. Always capturing your actions on your own video camera.

I guess you guys and gals at FPD don’t understand what VENTING is all about.

By these emails, it clearly shows you talk out both side of your face.

If I were you I’d STFU and go back to patrol and earn you money like real cops do.

YES the defense lawyers are hoping the MOB mentality goes away, I’ll give you that one.

      1. wondered about that, when I saw the “verbal judo” reference; HS classmate has presented seminars on that at risk management conferences to help those of us who are civilians understand better 🙂

  5. Wow, how does this LA Times article support the cooling off off of “the mob mentality”?
Am I blind or missing some detail? I read this LA Times article 3 times, I don’t see a reference to anyone cooling off of anything.
Good n Bloated is a pathological liar-isn’t he?

Kelly Thomas, that episode of Wild Wild West on July 5th 2011, the Slaughterhouse 6 nor Sellers the enabler, have been forgotten 6 months later and won’t. ever.

And the only “mob” is him , his posse inside neon sign land and council.
Fantasy, pure fantasy by raging, self absorbed, unhinged, psychotics who are socially impaired.

We aren’t going anywhere and nothing is “forgotten”-Count on it.
now put that in the LA Times

    1. Merijoe you are so correct, NOTHING in that article even comes close to saying anything is calming down. In fact, quite the contrary is written.

      Apparently Chaz can’t read.

  6. Looks like Fullerton PD higher ups have decided that ol donut stuffin Goodlie is a lie-a-bility!! Now he will no longer be the FACE of Fullerton PD. The officers (as in Lt. and Cpt.) are finally taking over and gonna do their jobs! Only took a death and a few sexual perversions in the back seat of a patrol car to make that happen!
One of the mob mentality mentors (Sgt. Dunkin Donuts Goodlie) will be in the background still making up stories for public consumption. The shift to a patrol car was impossible unless they buy a stretch limo to fit Sgt. Goodfella into.
Tuco says, the facts slowly seep out from the cesspool of FPD. Little by Little, Bit by Bit, the culture of corruption is revealed!

    1. Cloaking Sgt Goodrich’s control and manipulation of information by making others the face of the department is a step away from transparency. His shenanigans would just be shielded behind an artificial facade. If this is a transitional arrangement where he will be phased out of the information game, then it is a step in the right direction.

    2. We hope you are right about the Lieutenants and Captains. But it ill have to be more forceful than Hugh’s interview with the Voice of CO/Fullerton Observer and Goodrich’s explaination of himself taking one step into the background.

  7. Im very concerned with the term, “Culture of Corruption” it sounds like something an honest spokesman would say. This goes far beyond that.

“Since reason is man’s basic means of survival, that which is proper to the life of a rational being is the good; that which negates, opposes or destroys it is the evil.” -Wikipedia

Evil is the violation of, or intent to violate, some moral code.
Evil is usually seen as the dualistic opposite of The Good. Definitions of evil vary, as does the analysis of its root motives and causes; however, evil is commonly associated with conscious and deliberate wrongdoing, discrimination designed to harm others, humiliation of people designed to diminish their psychological well-being and dignity, destructiveness, and acts of unnecessary or indiscriminate violence.” -Wikipedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil

Even all levels of U.S. Government have corruption. Intentionaly breaking a handcuffed citizens fingers, Deriliction of duty, Political maneuvering for personal gain,Outright torture of young, old, and the very unfortunate, would really make Satan open his checkbook and smile.

This is what interested me before all this broke out.

When examining medieval literature, chivalry can be classified into three basic but overlapping areas:

Duties to countrymen and fellow Christians: this contains virtues such as mercy, courage, valor, fairness, protection of the weak and the poor, and in the servant-hood of the knight to his lord. This also brings with it the idea of being willing to give one’s life for another’s; whether he would be giving his life for a poor man or his lord.
Duties to God: this would contain being faithful to God, protecting the innocent, being faithful to the church, being the champion of good against evil, being generous and obeying God above the feudal lord.
Duties to women: this is probably the most familiar aspect of chivalry. This would contain what is often called courtly love, the idea that the knight is to serve a lady, and after her all other ladies. Most especially in this category is a general gentleness and graciousness to all women.
These three areas obviously overlap quite frequently in chivalry, and are often indistinguishable.

Different weight given to different areas produced different strands of chivalry:

warrior chivalry, in which a knight’s chief duty is to his lord, as exemplified by Sir Gawain in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle
religious chivalry, in which a knight’s chief duty is to protect the innocent and serve God, as exemplified by Sir Galahad or Sir Percival in the Grail legends.
courtly love chivalry, in which a knight’s chief duty is to his own lady, and after her, all ladies, as exemplified by Sir Lancelot in his love for Queen Guinevere or Sir Tristan in his love for Iseult

  8. The caption reads “The closer you look, the worse it gets…” Well I guess you meant literally and figuratively. Literally speaking, the closer I looked I did notice this boob in blue was sharp enough to wear a black tie that nicely clashed with his dark navy blouse. Look closely and you too will learn that Sgt. Good & Plenty adds color blindness to his laundry list of handicaps.

  9. A good clip to check out is the 7-19-11 council meeting’s public comments portion. Pay particular attention to the councilmembers body language, facial expression, voice inflection and their tones. Creepy cats. Guilty as all hell of a coverup .

  10. Why does everyone surrounding Sellers keep sending him newsbites. Is he that uninformed about the issues at hand that he has to have everyone brief him about everything. Besides the news stories are not very relevent to the issues at hand as the purpose of the emails are just to keep him up to date regarding public opinion.
If he was on top of his job , he would’nt need to worry about public opinion. The nature of these emails just shows that he is not doing his job that he’s being paid so well for.

  11. It is said in the study of Psycology that there are two faces of every person. The left brain controls the right face and vice versa.
The right face usually shows the logic or the face they are projecting to the public. The left side of the face usually reveals the inner man and his emotions. The two sides are sometimes out of sync when there is conflict between the two brains.
See if you can distinguish the differences are of the two brains in the example below.

  12. “Roughly, 150 officers die in the line of duty each year. Meanwhile, police officer suicides number at least 250 every year.”

Of the 31000 gun deaths in 2007, over half were suicides.

Making the world a worst place to live isnt going to help anybody much.

    1. Gun-related homicide rates in the United States are also twenty to thirty-five times higher than they are in countries that are economically and politically similar to it.

I think that it’s noteworthy, that during the 1980s and early 1990s, homicide rates surged in cities across the United States.

Handgun homicides accounted for nearly all of the overall increase in the homicide rate, from 1985 to 1993, while homicide rates involving other weapons declined during that time frame.

The rising trend in homicide rates during the 1980s and early 1990s was most pronounced among youths and Hispanic and African American males in the United States, with the injury and death rates tripling for black males aged 13 through 17 and doubling for black males aged 18 through 24.

The rise in crack cocaine use in cities across the United States is often cited as a factor for increased gun violence among youths during this time period.

So you may ask yourself, where did the crack cocaine come from?

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Webb

…so when someone ask you next time who the heck is was to blame is for all the guns and drugs that were flooding into the country back then in the late 80’s and early 90’s came from, look no further than your own government for those whom were sabotaging our societal norms.

  13. Steve Brow :
We hope you are right about the Lieutenants and Captains. But it ill have to be more forceful than Hugh’s interview with the Voice of CO/Fullerton Observer and Goodrich’s explaination of himself taking one step into the background.

Steve I think the change in light of many comments here, is going to be a simple cosmetic change for FPD.

The emails put up on this blog have clearly destroyed Sergeant Goodwrenches credibility with those paying attention.

Chief Hughes knows that, and simply put someone else up front to take over the deception that will continue.

Shall we say the Chief is going to allow a different “used car salesman” to make the pitch for FPD.

Just a change in a propaganda minister.

Someone in the city has called BS on this by leaking these emails. NO doubt an “disgruntled” employee LOL!!!!

We both can bet that FPD and city officials are more concerned about the “leak” than anything else right now. It’s got them flustered big time.

It appears Sellers is lost in the fog for the most part. He is focused on his retirement “package”, and ol Andy keeps humping his leg by being a loyal employee to an obvious inept leader by sending him emails everytime someone sneezes.

What a pathetic union leader he must be.

Funny how Sellers mentions talking to his wife before more news stories come out, LOL!!!!

  14. Besides being executed for “cowardice” in wartime., in police work back before we became a kindler gentler group in law enforcement (internally), you got your “ass kicked” if you were a coward.

If that didn’t happen, your “life” was made miserable by at least the “silent treatment”.

The message was clear find another job.

Today, we must remain silent about cowards among the culture or suffer discipline for “hostile work” environment.

Now days cowards are promoted, and later become high ranking officials.

  15. “The popular misconception is that narcissists love themselves. In reality, they direct their love to other people’s impressions of them. He who loves only impressions is incapable of loving people, himself included.

But the narcissist does possess the in-bred desire to love and to be loved. If he cannot love himself – he must love his reflection. But to love his reflection – it must be loveable. Thus, driven by the insatiable urge to love (which we all possess), the narcissist is preoccupied with projecting a loveable image, albeit compatible with his self-image (the way he “sees” himself).

The narcissist maintains this projected image and invests resources and energy in it, sometimes depleting him to the point of rendering him vulnerable to external threats.

But the most important characteristic of the narcissist’s projected image is its lovability.”

  16. “No wonder that constant contact with such a specimen leaves you bustling with resentment.

They may be in constant need for attention (in a group they won’t let anybody but themselves speak, and even when they do, they don’t listen) or they posses an unfounded sense of entitlement; but we attribute many times their shallow behavior to an unconscious self-loathing.

Previous researches suggested that narcissists’ conscious self-views are balanced, being not uniformly positive: they regard themselves as being better than others in areas like status, dominance and intelligence (the agentic domains), but not in communal domains like kindness, morality, and emotional intimacy.”

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/What-039-s-Inside-the-Narcissist-Mind-48980.shtml

  17. “Narcissism as a psychological definition is typically seen as self-involved attitudes and behavior where there is little or no empathy for others. Narcissistic wounding starts early in life to children whose parents are insecure, abusive, addictive or have narcissistic patterns themselves.

Narcissistic injury happens to the child when his or her emotional needs are not met. The narcissistic parent has unresolved needs for attention and caretaking because his or her needs were not met in their early life. Neglect, physical, mental and sexual abuse, being spoiled and not given structure and limits create the wounding. Narcissism can be an inflated ego sub part or the trait can take over the personality. Narcissistic attitudes and behavior come from the ego defenses that function as smoke screens to hide the deep shame and fractures that came from being hurt emotionally or physically as a child.”

  18. Lifesaving Service,
“Your above comment, They may be in constant need for attention (in a group they won’t let anybody but themselves speak, and even when they do, they don’t listen) or they posses an unfounded sense of entitlement; but we attribute many times their shallow behavior to an unconscious self-loathing.”
I know someone EXACTLY like this. He’s not a cop, but he mentions how people often think he’s a cop. He prefaces every statement with “Look, here’s the deal….(then) Bla bla bla bla bla……”
Up until 3 weeks ago, he only had one friend left; me. Now he’s got none. Completely intolerable these days.

  19. Malignant narcissists are everywhere. 1 to 3 of every 20 people you meet are malignant narcissists. 75% of the pathologically narcissistic are male. You can find them in law enforcement, politics, business, the clergy, medical professionals, and in post offices. The smart ones easily move up the food chain. They know when to brown nose and suck-up to get ahead and further their grandiose sense of themselves. -Officer.com

    http://www.officer.com/article/10248968/the-malignant-narcissist

  20. Thanks for those stats LS…
My friend is a Repiratory Therapist, but goes on to impress people he meets for the first time and tells them he’s a doctor. Really!
This is an interesting fact from that narcisstic mind article you posted:
“An Implicit Association Test was employed to assess the subjects’ underlying views on their self-esteem, agency and communion. This method records reaction times to computer-based word associations and the subjects were not aware that their self-esteem is being assessed during all this time.

The team found that narcissists do not uniformly dislike themselves “deep down inside”: they displayed positive unconscious self-views in agentic domains and not in communal ones. Thus narcissists have a psychological condition: they are somewhat imbalanced at both conscious and unconscious levels.”

  21. This is the police oath
I DO SOLEMNLY DECLARE UPON MY HONOUR AND CONSCIENCE THAT I WILL ACT AT ALL TIMES TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY AND KNOWLEDGE IN A MANNER BEFITTING A POLICE OFFICER

I WILL PRESERVE THE DIGNITY AND WILL RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF ALL INDIVIDUALS

I WILL DISCHARGE MY DUTIES WITH INTEGRITY AND WILL PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING AND CONCILIATION

I WILL EXERCISE MY AUTHORITY AS A POLICE OFFICER IN THE MANNER INTENDED BY THE LAW

I WILL FAITHFULLY OBEY THE ORDERS OF MY SUPERIORS AND WILL BE READY TO CONFRONT DANGER IN THE LINE OF DUTY

I WILL ACT WITH HONESTY, COURTESY AND REGARD FOR THE WELFARE OF OTHERS, AND WILL ENDEAVOUR TO DEVELOP THE ESPRIT DE CORPS

I WILL ACT JUSTLY AND IMPARTIALLY AND WITH PROPRIETY TOWARDS MY FELLOW OFFICERS

I WILL CONSTANTLY STRIVE TO HONOUR THIS OATH IN MY SERVICE AS A POLICE OFFICER

  22. This “mob mentality” that Andrew speaks of, shows his lack of paying attention during his career.

Time in his present position might have made him become more arrogant than smart. I haven’t seen the slightest bit of smarts yet.

There are many Sergeant Goodwrenches out there. Once in a great while their ignorance bites them in the butt.

The fatal flaw in FPD’s attitude and actions show how their leadership will fail at the end of the day.

The worst mistake ANY cop can make in conducting themselves like fools and morons is, to think those above them will cover their actions and they have no worries.

Your association attorneys love all you DUMB cops, you are making them wealthy. And YES they do think most of you are dumb, they have told me.

Someone should ask Officers Ramos and Cincinelli if they feel alone right now?

Is Goodwrench,McKinely,Sellers,Hamilton, or Hughes calling them up once a week and telling them to hang tuff?

They missed the boat completely when they FAIL to realize that it will be the PUBLIC, the common folks they SCREW with, that will decide their fate.

That fate could be prison time, or paying punative damages in a civil suit. The general damages awarded could be staggering.

Who will decide if Ramos and Cincinelli are guilty as charged? A jury with common working class people.

Could be friends of the tow truck driver who was in the recent video we saw. Could be friends of Officer Rincons victims? How about Van Meth’s friends?

How about friends of those who got tickets for honking their horns? You have to be a FOOL to think that can’t happen.

Any of them could be on the jury. Could be older folks who have an ax to grind with FPD or Law Enforcement in general.

If you think the attorney’s can weed them all out before trial think again.

If you don’t think it can happen we all remember OJ Simpson’s criminal trial? OUCH!!!!

My training officers back in the day shared their wisdom from day one, DO NOT screw with those who hold your destiny in the palm of their hands by a simple vote.

Do your job, don’t screw with folks because YOU CAN.

Ron Thomas will not be doing the public any favors if his family settles this case without having Sellers,Hughes, and many like them explain their actions and conduct.

If you want to punish this arrogance we now see in some of these emails, let’s hope the smart asses pay some money out of THEIR personal incomes for what we are still seeing.

That too has happened, but not enough for those like Sellers to be overly concerned.

Let’s hope the Thomas family attorney is alot like Attorney Yagman, who went after LAPD and Daryl Gates to get their attention on certain types of conduct.

If members of FPD have endured Federal Civil Rights lawsuit in their day, they know how humbling that process can be, we would NOT be seeing the obvious arrogance.

I never went through that process. Many of those I know that did, were changed people there after.

Tuff cops I thought, I noticed they didn’t have much ASS left when they left the courtroom.

I said to myself, “no thanks”, I think I’ll continue to play be the rules and be safe.

My peers hated me for it, but I can look in the mirror everyday and shave, and NOT see any ghosts from the past.

    1. …from the Shakespeare’s, “Hamlet”:

“To thine own self be true” is Polonius’s last piece of advice to his son Laertes, who is in a hurry to get on the next boat to Paris, where he’ll be safe from his father’s long-winded speeches [see NEITHER A BORROWER NOR A LENDER BE].

Polonius has in mind something much more Elizabethan than the New Age self-knowledge that the phrase now suggests. As Polonius sees it, borrowing money, loaning money, carousing with women of dubious character, and other intemperate pursuits are “false” to the self. By “false” Polonius seems to mean “disadvantageous” or “detrimental to your image”; by “true” he means “loyal to your own best interests.” Take care of yourself first, he counsels, and that way you’ll be in a position to take care of others. There is wisdom in the old man’s warnings, of course; but he repeats orthodox platitudes with unwonted self-satisfaction. Polonius, who is deeply impressed with his wordliness, has perfected the arts of protecting his interests and of projecting seeming virtues, his method of being “true” to others. Never mind that this includes spying on Hamlet for King Claudius. Never mind, as well, that many of Polonius’s haughty, if not trite, kernels of wisdom are now taken as Shakespeare’s own wise pronouncements on living a proper life.

    2. As to:

And YES they do think most of you are dumb, they have told me.

      – before retirement, I interacted with police and fire personnel on a daily basis. I found many of them to be, shall we say, “challenged” in common sense; I used the phrase “I see” frequently, when I really wanted to ask “who decided you could have access to guns (LEO) or axes (FF)?”

[T]hey FAIL to realize that it will be the PUBLIC, the common folks they SCREW with, that will decide their fate.

      – so true

Any of them could be on the jury. Could be older folks who have an ax to grind with FPD or Law Enforcement in general.

      – again, true

      – for myself, I haven’t been on an OC jury for several years, so I’m probably looking at it soon…

    3. Thank you, , your post really moved me…….too bad they can’t bottle you and pass some of you along to the others…… 🙂

  23. “A big problem with society is that people are not ever or properly rewarded.” “The best Cop and your best friend.”

The citation for Andy Samuel Griffith: (Presidential Medal of Freedom)

Andy Griffith is one of America’s best-known and most beloved entertainers. After his introduction to a national audience as a stand-up comedian on The Ed Sullivan Show in the 1950s, he went on to star in such celebrated television shows as The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock. As a legend of the stage, cinema, and television, Andy Griffith has built an enduring career and set a standard of excellence in entertainment. He is a man of humor, integrity, and compassion. The United States honors Andy Griffith for demonstrating the finest qualities of our country and for a lifetime of memorable performances that have brought joy to millions of Americans of all ages.

He said ‘it was about love. Barney would set himself up for a fall, and Andy would be there to catch him.’ The enduring appeal of the show has always depended — and still does — on the simplicity and sweetness and rectitude of the man behind the badge. TV shows come and go, but there’s only one Andy Griffith. And we thank him for being such a friendly and beloved presence in our American life.”

  25. Pressures to conform to certain aspects of “police culture”, such as the Blue Code of Silence, which can “sustain an oppositional criminal subculture protecting the interests of police who violate the law”[9] and a “‘we-they’ perspective in which outsiders are viewed with suspicion or distrust”[8]
command and control structures with a rigid hierarchical foundation (“results indicate that the more rigid the hierarchy, the lower the scores on a measure of ethical decision-making” concludes one study reviewed in the report);[10] and
deficiencies in internal accountability mechanisms (including internal investigation processes).[8

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_brutality

  26. I believe the “deficiencies in internal accountability mechanisms, which include internal investigation processes” is where the Fullerton Police Department fell especially short.
I would like to see the City Council ask the police department for a monthly internal quality assurance audit on random police procedures that they seem to be struggling with, as well as a random and transparent survey of Fullerton residents who have had interactions with the police department, until we as citizens gain back confidence in those entrusted to protect us.

  27. Fullerton lover is dreaming. I bet next will be a civilian review board of the FPD. Ain’t gonna happen. That is why Police Union has the three blind mice on the city council. You see all the dirt comes out and there is lots of it.
Remember, “If you are gonna shoot, shoot! Don’t talk!”

    1. Remember: There’s two kinds of people. Those that come through the door and those that come through the window.

  28. The interim Chief is proposing it (Civilian Review Board), the economics of lawsuits, and the inevitable flood of media, and, Citizenry will make the issue very possible. They have spent like drunken Sailors, but drunken sailors stop when they run out of money, for the most part. Maybe even deep down they know this city is not just financialy bankrupt.
Revenues will very probably be way down. “people from the area like to do buisness in Fullerton, its known as a friendly town” thats a shame because the country in general, has gone down, and now people will avoid this once popular, very happy, warm, friendly town. Fullerton was one of the top ten safest cities in America (with a population over 100,000) until the city was overrun by the many bars, drugs, and thugs of all kinds.

In summary it could have been a lot lot worst, things can still happen. Follow the money and the bottom line. “PSYCHOLOGICAL PROFILES FOR EVERYBODY” (just kidding)

“In one statement, he was arrogant, paranoid, and condesending,,, thats very hard to do” -Psychiatrist, refering to our great leader.

  29. “MOB MENTALITY” more than likely its, Psychological projection or projection bias

Psychological projection or projection bias is a psychological defense mechanism where a person subconsciously denies his or her own attributes, thoughts, and emotions, which are then ascribed to the outside world, usually to other people. Thus, projection involves imagining or projecting the belief that others originate those feelings.

Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires without letting the conscious mind recognize them.

An example of this behavior might be blaming another for self failure. The mind may avoid the discomfort of consciously admitting personal faults by keeping those feelings unconscious, and by redirecting libidinal satisfaction by attaching, or “projecting,” those same faults onto another person or object. -Wikipedia

Ive overposted about Narcissism, but this is about your safety and is relevent, COMMUNICATING WITH A NARCISSIST

Before proceeding with details about how to interact with a narcissist, take a look at what you want out of the engagement. If you are looking for equal treatment, acknowledgement, recognition, or significance in his or her eyes, you might be well advised to simply move on. Chances are very good that you will invest excessive amounts of energy, time, and perhaps money, in striving to get what you want. In reality, the possibility that you will succeed is minimal.

However, if you are in a position where you feel you have little choice but to interact with a narcissist, read on.
