Fullerton News Tribune As Worthless As Ever

How about some news?

Just in case anybody thought the Fullerton News Tribune might somehow become more, you know, relevant, with the departure of Barbara Giasone, they had better think again.

Let us contemplate this week’s edition. In a week when the City Council held a special meeting to discuss millions in projected budget deficits, the Thursday News Tribune’s big story (by a guy named Bruce Chambers), was about – drum roll – tulips.

Okay some guy grows tulips in his front yard, and that’s great. Tulips and daffodils are pretty and I love digging up flower beds. But is that news?

I don’t think so, but, what do I know. I’m just a dog.

  1. Although she never did a real news story, Giasone was not responsible for editorial direction, either.

Good thing FFFF is around. Please get back to Fullerton stuff.

  2. I noticed that Jennifer Muir’s writeup on the Daly/Barbre boondoggle never made it to print either. Helloo… anybody home?

  3. if not for FFFF, Fullertonites would be ignorant of the corruption that riddles our city’s government. keep up the good work, FFFF, you are the true voice of fullerton

  4. I was a little surprised that Neleson didn’t want each of the groups to give their presentations on Tuesday night. I am sure the citizens and employees wanted to hear what was being presented since layoffs are imminent.

  5. Not sure who the person is behind Jan Flory’s dog, but FFFF’s Travis Kiger knows the author Bruce Chambers although he might not realize it. We all went to the same church years ago in Placentia.

This isn’t the first article about Wayne Daniels’ tulips. Such as it is, I think the underlying purpose is an update on Wayne Daniels. I can tell you from personal experience he was a well respected teacher at Fullerton High School for 40-something years. I knew he had a garden, but for me (and probably all other FUHS alumni) an update on Daniels is what interested me more than anything else. There are thousands of Fullerton residents who had Daniels as their teacher.

    For what it’s worth…

  6. DNC,

I did not write this post, but I do agree with it. I’m not sure what my connections to Bruce Chambers (the Register’s best photog) or Wayne Daniels (my neighbor) have to do with anything.

The post doesn’t seem to really be about Bruce or Wayne. It’s about the editors at the Fullerton News Tribune/OC Register who serially neglect legitimate stories in favor of feel-good fluff. The gaping truth hole left by the lack of investigative journalism at the Tribune must be filled by somebody, even if it’s only us lowly bloggers.

  7. Travis, I wasn’t suggesting your connections have anything to do with the story. Whoever wrote it said, “by a guy named Bruce Chambers” and I infered that person didn’t know Bruce. In case the author was you, I was offering a friendly reminder in case you forgot who Bruce was. No harm intended.

You’re absolutely correct though, the story is not newsworthy, it’s a feel good piece and nothing more. Bruce would tell you that much, I’m sure.

Feel good stories in moderation (i.e. much less often) wouldn’t bother me if the person had some sort of local significance. I think Wayne Daniels does. He probably had 10,000 students over the course of his career, if not more.

This is different than feel good stories about people who nobody knows, like the woman who appeared on Wheel of Fortune. At least with Wayne Daniels, there’s no dispute he worked and lives in Fullerton. But the Wheel of Fortune girl, who knows?
