Doug Chaffee, a Democratic Orange County Supervisor (and former board chairman), has faced several controversies and political challenges, primarily stemming from his close alliance with convicted former Supervisor Andrew Do, his wife’s past criminal behavior, and siding with Republican colleagues on controversial issues.
Association with Convicted Supervisor Andrew Do: Chaffee was a close ally of former Supervisor Andrew Do, calling him a “mentor”. Do later pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges for steering millions in COVID funds to himself, according to Voice of OC. While investigations centered on Do, audits found widespread questionable spending during their joint tenure, reported Voice of OC.
Wife’s Criminal Charges for Stealing Election Signs: In 2018, Doug Chaffee’s wife, Paulette Chaffee, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of petty theft for stealing campaign signs that labeled her a “carpetbagger” during her run for Fullerton City Council. She later pleaded guilty to the charges, according to OC Independent.
Irritating Local Democrats: As a Democrat, Chaffee has drawn anger from his own party by frequently voting with Republican colleagues, such as supporting a 2023 move to restrict the LGBTQ+ Pride flag from being flown on county property. This led to a narrow reelection win in 2022 after his party tried to oust him.
Opposition to New Contracting Rules: In 2024, Chaffee opposed a proposal to tighten rules on revealing familial relationships in county contracts, arguing it would be “cumbersome” and potentially discriminatory, despite the backdrop of the Andrew Do scandal, noted Voice of OC.
OC Power Authority (OCPA) Criticism: Chaffee was involved in the controversial agency, initially defending it before later moving to have the county withdraw from the troubled local power agency after audits revealed severe mismanagement, reported Voice of OC.
Paulette works as an Office Ambassador for her husband’s Fourth District Supervisor office. In this role, she represents the county at local civic events, ribbon cuttings, and affordable housing openings
