One Good Vote in 2011

Which is a lot better than none. We would be remiss not to offer a tip ‘o the cap to County Supervisor Shawn Nelson for taking on the obscene pay raises handed out by the County CEO Tom Mauk to a couple of his cronies.

The egregious raises were given out three or four years ago within months of these employees being promoted to new jobs by Mauk. The multiple raises went well into double digit territory, as uncovered during a Performance Audit of the County’s own Human Resources Department.

As an ad hoc subcommittee studying the findings of the audit, Nelson and Supervisor Pat Bates recommended reversing the raises, and were supported  by John Moorlach at the December 6th Board meeting. Supervisors Bill Campbell and Janet Nguyen fought hard to keep the astronomical raises in place.

Well, kudos to Nelson, Bates, and Moorlach for calling the CEO on his hypocrisy and for taking a big step in the direction of accountability at the County Hall of Administration.

Yep. Good vote. I like the old hair color, too.

    • #2 by havegunwilltravel on January 3, 2012

      Ditto.

  2. #3 by County Clerk on January 3, 2012

Actually, that vote did wonders for morale at the County. We know Nelson is tough but he seems to want to be consistent and fair without cronyism.

Think Mauk, think Rob Richardson and Carlos Bustamante.

I now have a renewed respect for Pat Bates, wasn’t too sure about her-thanks for the info

Pat Bates is a piece of work. Be glad she got one thing right.

The termed out Campbell wasn’t going to alienate all those people who’ll be buying his lunch in 2013.

The to-be-unelected Nguyen is just acting as Janet does — stupidly. This won’t save her job.

Well done Shawn. Cronyism=Corruption. Just ask that horse’s behind that recently served as McKinley and Jones campaign treasurer, and then was appointed/annointed as the new Fullerton Planning Commissioner, Larry Bennett.

And dont forget those cryptkeepers who sit on the Fullerton council playing hangman -they may know a little about Cronyism, I think

    • #9 by County Clerk on January 3, 2012

      cryptkeepers for the win!

We can forget that Nelson was the one who blessed the city with Chief Mike Sellers before he left the Fullerton city Clownsel.

    • #11 by Cody on January 3, 2012

I take it Sellers was the top pick from the list of candidates for the chiefs job, that ain’t saying much about the pool to choose from. Just saying.

    • #12 by Anonymous on January 3, 2012

      Huh? I don’t remember that.

It is never too late to do the right thing and what Mr. Nelson has done here leads me to believe that he gets it.

  9. #14 by Just a Champion on January 3, 2012

He doesnt need a portable oxygen tank and I.V.

  10. #15 by Brivo Samsila on January 3, 2012

Nelson pasted on Fullerton PD Cheif finalist and Fullerton resident Philp Sanchez who is now the Chief at Pasadena PD. Maybe Nelson did not like Mr. Sanchez’s last name?

    • #16 by County Clerk on January 3, 2012

Or maybe the guy had a bad interview.

    • #17 by Cory St. John on January 3, 2012

Or maybe Sanchez was full of himself.

    • #18 by Wrong Guy on January 4, 2012

Yes, I see. FPD has a reputation for being racist towards Mexicans.

Or maybe Nelson is a confused man. He wants change and votes like a leader however he is supporting Ed Royce for congress? Let’s not forget Ed was more than happy to support the three old men in each of their runs for city counsel.

Shawn Nelson and Ed Royce are do nothing hacks!

    • #20 by Hollis Dugan on January 3, 2012

Can one actually be a do nothing having just done something? Just asking for clarification.

  12. #21 by Anonymous on January 3, 2012

County Supervisor Shawn Nelson takes a large pension for a short term?

  13. #22 by merijoe on January 4, 2012

BTW, I spoke with a retailer in good old conservative, south OC, Lake Forest, they know all about the Kelly Thomas wrongful death by cop, are disgusted and were very happy to hear about the recall efforts, and wish they could vote.

One more person who may have friends or family in Fullerton to spread the word of the recall.

  14. #23 by Allan Bartlett on January 4, 2012

Once again Shawn proves that he is not only the most politically astute on the current Supe Board, but he has the taxpayer’s back as well. Well Done Nelson.
