Actually if you aren't on the take, doing something illegal, or tuning someone up/killing or murdering someone. Then you should welcome any all photos/videos, because they prove you're doing your job honestly. If you're photo'd/video'd giving a ticket, arresting someone, or even using force and not abusing the "perp" those videos or pictures prove it, if you had prove you weren't, people have been known to file false reports against officers, those video's or pictures could get you off the hook. A big part of the problem against video is that the cops are so defensive. If I were one and I saw someone videoing or taking pictures of me while on duty, I'd walk over shake their hand and ask them to mail or email me a copy. That way I'd have them if I ever needed them, I'd even buy a copy if I had to, but officer, you'd really be amazed how far simple friendliness and being nice will take you. You need to stop looking at all of us as potential criminals and terroristes and realize that we without badges are basically the same as you, except when it comes to police abuse and murder, but even then I'd expect that 99% of you and 99% of us agree that shouldn't happen. It's just that most of you aren't Frank Serpico, and don't have the guts to break omerta, and arrest the bad cops you're aware of.

I find it VERY hard to believe that you took time away from your busy schedule of filing ridiculous lawsuits against nearly every person, group and organization in this fine country to shadow an unknown homeless man. We are all angry and upset over this matter, and to throw more of your lies into the fire just to get your overused name in the spotlight is pathetic. You Mr. Perales need to go back to Van Nuys HS and relearn what being an American is about.

I think it falls under the same one that states something about enciting a riot. I'm not sure I total agree with how it was imposed, but I can see where the cop may have felt threatened by the situation. There were a lot of people there and, being a human, if I were one of what appears to be about 3 cops, surrounded by about 50 or 60 people, I would want that dispursed if I started feeling threatened - and so would you. You're lying to yourself if you think you wouldn't. I get really tired of people judging people without considering how they would respond themselves.

The public should have a right to film the police, and the police should not respond adversley because of it - in fact, I think it should be a crime for a cop to adversley respond to a video being shot because of the video itself. In this particular case, I don't think the video was the issue because the cop didn't go after the guy that picked it up, I think the real issue was the fact that the guy video taping was about one foot from the cop that was trying to arrest the drunken slob that was obviously resisting. Because of the power intrusted in our police they must not take that power and abuse it. The video camera is a tool for the public to ensure that the trust remains in tact.

In the end, if we want to hold the cops accountable, then we have to hold ourselves accountable too. We are all people and function the same way. If your getting arrested, don't fight it with the cops, fight it in court, your fight against the cops only makes for worse charges and no empathy from the general public (aka the Jury).

It wasn't the "public intoxication" that was a problem here, it was the resisting that was a problem. The video guy was too close to the cops and felt threatning to me watching. A few things that I thought were wrong: 1) Cop punching first guy, those seemed uncalled for; 2) Cop hitting video camera directly makes it look like "don't film this" (its a public site, video is legal; however, he didn't stop the next guy); 3) Cops could have handled backing the crowd up much better. They way the bald cop handled it only causes the crowd to get more angry. The first video guy should have been told to backup at least x (lets say 10) yards or you'll be arrested for obstructing justice - because that is what he was doing by being so close and in the cops face. We have to be honest with ourselves and ask "what would I have done if I were that cop". Are there bad cops, absolutely, did these cops do anything bad - yea, some, but not as bad as some are trying to make it. Should cops be held accountable when they do something bad - absolutely! The Kelly Thomas case is pretty clear as to the terrible act that these cops did and I think the DA is correct in his charges in that case, but this case on this site is just not that bad.
