Introducing: Marty Burbank

UPDATE: HERE IS A POST THE HARPOON PUBLISHED LAST SUMMER. AFTER YESTERDAY’S ITEM ON A COUNCIL-WANNABE NAMED MARTY BURBANK, WE FIGURED IT MIGHT BE TIMELY TO POST THIS AGAIN – JUST TO LET THE FRIENDS GET AN EYE AND EARFUL OF A MAN WHO WANTS TO BE OUR LEADER.

WHAT A GUY. EVEN THOUGHT HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT HOW REDEVELOPMENT WORKS, HE IS PERFECTLY HAPPY TO SUPORT IT, MISCHARACTERIZE IT, AND START GIVING LECTURES TO THOSE WHO ARE JUST AS UNINFORMED AS HE IS.

THE COMMENTS WE RECEIVED WERE ALSO RIGHT ON.

When the Redevelopment expansion proposal was first trotted out by the City Council a while back, we noted that one of the orchestrated cheers came from a chap named Marty Burbank. Now, we had never even heard of Mr. Burbank until he popped up to announce his support of the plan that necessarily requires the City Council to making legal findings of blight where none exists, thus requiring them to mislead the public about the basis for the whole deal. Well, okay. Just another sycophantic Chamber of Commerce shill who doesn’t even appear to understand what he is cheering for. If he does, so much the worse.

But, as they say, the plot thickens. One of our pajaritos informed us that Mr. Burbank is not only a lawyer and an up-and-coming Chamber of Commerce figure, but that he has politicalaspirations, too. Well, that figures. This is Fullerton where knowledge of municipal government is an immediate disqualification for office, and stoogery always gets you a leg up. Sure enough, we located his website promoting a campaign for City Council in 2010. And the guy’s a Rotarian! Be still Dick Jones’ throbbing…er, heart.

Well, we hate to be spoilsports, but we don’t think starting out a campaign for public office by encouraging the City Council to perpetrate an illegal fraud is a great beginning.

Also we have grown a bit weary of the Chamber of Commerce being represented by “professionals” and educrats who really aren’t in business at all, especially when they perform as stooges for City Hall. And Chamber Executive Director Theresa Harvey is one of the biggest City Hall stooges we can recall – and that’s saying something! She is deliberately screwing all the Chamber members who will be ultimately hurt by Redevelopment discrimination and corporate subsidies.

City staff enjoys strong Chamber of Commerce support...

Marty, Theresa, et al., here’s a quick Redevelopment primer and one you will take to heart if in fact you care anything about free enterprise and small businesses, or your members, for that matter:

Redevelopment favors a relative few selected businesses at the expense of the all the others in the pursuit to claim a share of a finite amount of consumer disposable income. Any government policy that favors a minority of businesses at the expense of the majority is, a fortiori,  ANTI-BUSINESS!

Get it? Good.

Anyway, we’ll be keeping our eye on Marty and any other political aspirants who want to dump the Redevelopment load on the good folks of Fullerton.

  1. I bet that most members of the Chamber, being successful entrepreneurs, would individually espouse a belief in free-market capitalism and minimal government interference. Unfortunately many of them have been duped into participating in Fullerton’s greatest advocacy for corporate welfare and big government – their own Chamber of Commerce.

It’s time for members to reconsider that annual membership fee. Or at least demand a candidate that can think for himself.

  2. Don’t forget that the cheerleaders are often vocal folks within the chamber and or Rotary that stand to gain from the expansion. Bankers that make loans, realtors that sell property, non profit types that can get redevelopment to give them funds. Pretty thin veil but for those that dont know whats up it can look legit.

I give Burbank a pass for now. He is just listening to the wrong people. We’ve seen this time and time again from those looking to run for council. Burbank is clearly trying to gain favor with any group that can back him and he sees the chamber as the voice of business. Hopefully he figures it out in time to impress the Friends. If not, he better be ready for some old fashioned tar and feathering.

    1. Willis, you must be kidding. You give him a pass because you hope he might get smart? He’s trying to gain favor (pandering) and you give him a pass?

No. The guy has decided which course he wants to take. He’s nailed his colors to the mast. I wouldn’t have any respect for a candidate that declared and then started working on his platform. That’s the sort of thing you’d hear from Quirk or Keller. This guy is just a sad tool.

YOU HEARD HIM SAY IT: AS A LAWYER HE DOESN’T KNOW IF THE FINDING OF BLIGHT IS LEGAL. AND HE ENDS UP ENDORSING IT! WHAT KIND OF IDIOT LAWYER WOULD SAY SOMETHING SO GODDAM STUPID?

      1. Well, he is an estate attorney. Like other tax attorneys, they tend operate by bending the law and hoping nobody gets caught. Judging from what I’ve read on this site, he would fit right in. Business as usual.

  3. Maybe Willis is right. The best thing this guy could do for his campaign is to come on this site and explain himself.

    1. I watched the clip, this Burbank dude was not in line when they were passing out courage. He would cut off his nose before he would esplaine himself on this blog or anywhere for that matter.

  4. Travis :

Or at least demand a candidate that can think for himself.

Travis, you are Fullerton’s future, embrace it and have fun.

    1. I’ve never heard of this guy in my life, based off of what he said, it’s obvious the guy’s a hack.

    1. the name Burbank’s getting for himself is actually very similar to yours Chamber Star, it’s “Chamber Stooge”.

      1. Please build up, don’t knock down. These walls took many, many years to build by many wonderful builders.

        1. The walls are your prison cell, Mr. Star. And they are all covered in stucco and fake brick. Dick Jones is your warden and it loks like Mr. Burbank wants to replace him.

  5. So far there has been no sign of The Harpoon. Over Thanksgiving, the fishing trawler he was on went down in the Sea of Japan. Apparently, the search and rescue mission has been called off.

I believe we may never hear from The Harpoon again 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 …….

  6. Chamber Star, I recall your prediction that “Team Fullerton” would win the day for Mrs. Ackerman in the Assembly election. Now you advise to “watch out for Marty.” The “giant” Ackerman name did not win and the mighty “Team Fullerton” was not a factor at all. You do not have a feeling for the pulse of politics in Fullerton or emerging trends. Win an election, then you have standing. As for now, you belong shoulder-to-shoulder with Marty Burbank. Prepare to go down with the good ship Burbank!

  7. I hear several former Mayors of Fullerton are sailing the 7 Seas on a pirate ship searching for a friendly port. I hope Harpoon hasn’t run into foul play from these infamous pirates!
